Problem 1:
- it seemed that windows 7 ultimate can not boot when there are 5 partitions present

Solution 1:
1. Booted from an Ubuntu Live DVD
2. Extracted the necessary drivers to an external HDD
3. Deleted all partitions using gParted
4. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate, as I usually do.

My Typical Windows 7 Installation:
1. Partition the hard drive so that there will be a 2nd partition for saving data
2. Install Windows 7 with the usual options + Specific Drivers
3. Setup Portable Apps @2nd partition
  3.1 Firefox Portable with plug-ins
4. Setup Usual Applications
  4.1. Install McAfee Enterprise
  4.2. 7 zip
  4.3. MS Office 2007
  4.4. Yahoo Messenger 8
  4.5. Nokia PC Suite (for her phone)
5. Update the AntiVirus
6. Update Windows
7. Norton Ghost the current setup for quick restoration in the future.

• today was rather unproductive, or at least not as productive as I had hope it would be. i woke up late. i was able to answer 120/300 questions I had in mind. I was able to fiddle with my sister's second hand laptop for a number of hours. installed windows 7 on my brother's laptop. managed to answer up to problem 90 with Sam. also managed to talk with my mom for more than the usual few minutes. it would seem that i have accomplished a lot but i was actually procrastinating. i wasn't really able to clear my big rocks. :)

6. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
7. Check on: reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.

Backing Up My Mom's Laptop

Here are a few steps I'd like to remember and recycle should the need arise


Procedure:
1. Start > Run > "recent"
2. Note the different file extentsions used (*.doc, *.xls, etc)
3. Install 7zip (or have a portable copy), if you dont have one already. LINK1
4. Start > Run > "cmd" ==> Command Prompt Opens
5. On Command Prompt, 7z a -r x:/ownername-backup.7z c:\*.doc c:\xls c:\*.mp3 ...

Advantage of this approach:
1. accessing "recent" items gives you a good idea of what file extension she uses.
2. 7z (command line 7zip) recursively searches the drive for your data, eliminating manually traversing her directory tree.
3. 7z maintains the directory structure. it makes it easier for them to find their data after restoration.

Optional Considerations:
1. you may use WinDirStat Portable (LINK2) to analyze the disk usage and identify the biggest directories.
2. in case, it has become difficult to use the default Windows Explorer, Free Commander Portable (LINK3) can become a very powerful shell replacement.

• 06:15 Actually woked up on time for a change. Googled a bit, got emails to empty, read some google reader entries and had breakfast.
• 07:15 printed out "The Middle Way" from DIY Planner, and left for school. add to ATB To Do List: Find a good way to convert m4a/b to mp3.
• 08:15 Started answering Old Board Questions for rationalizing later at around 9pm. 06/2009-NP3
• 10:15 Breaktime answered some more Old Board Questions.
• 11:45 Finished Rationalizing. Got a copy of 06/2009 Old Boards, ate lunch at Volunteer Gina's Mom, got a haircut at Index.
• 13:00 Start Rationalizing Old Board Qs 06/2008-NP1. It seems there were a lot of repeat questions. The key for 06/2009-NP1 was also given.
• 15:00 Early dismissal bec maintenance work is to be done on the power generator. Chatted around a bit and the went home via the fast route.
• 17:30 Arrived home. Cooled down. Browsed a little. Ran Sam thru some Math problem solving drills. Do 5 questions right, get a 30 min.break
• 19:11 Note: Oliver successfully acquired a Dell PA-12 Power Adapter for a Dell Inspiron 1501. Unit will be used by Sister Xnn.
